Have You Found Your Assignment?

Here are some of the most common questions I get asked:

  • What’s my destiny?
  • How do I find my calling?
  • How did you find out what you wanted to do with your life?
  • How do I find my assignment?

These are great questions to ask and for some, the most difficult questions to answer.

There is no magic formula. Everyone is different.

Some people have a blueprint of their lives from a young age. They know exactly what they want to do from the beginning. These people often have an ‘aha’ moment from five years old, and they don’t change. They work towards their dream from the time they are old enough to learn. They have a ten-year plan from the time they are old enough to buy a planner. They are focussed.

They are sometimes VERY intimidating.

People! If this is NOT you, That is totally okay! Truth is, that cohort of people is very rare.

Most of us? We have some idea of the things we are good at. At best, a general idea of what we like.

So, I can’t speak for everyone. I can only speak from my experience. And what I have learned. Here is my story:

Have I always known what I wanted to do? Heck no! But I have always had a plan for the next three years, and I have found that God has guided my steps.

I started nursing when I was 17 years old. I knew I liked looking after people. I liked caring for people. I was too young to know what I wanted to do forever. But I was needing something to do for right then and there.

So I decided on nursing. It was a three-year degree. I had a goal for three years and was finished before I was 20. By 21 I was enjoying life as a registered nurse and while I knew I wouldn’t do it forever I learned how to study, work within a team, and develop all the skills that working within a multidisciplinary team gives you.

Even as my first year as a new graduate nurse I started dreaming about medicine and how much I would love to be a Doctor. By the second year as a nurse, I knew that I would love to practice as a doctor one day. There was not a moment from Heaven. Or a dream with an angel telling me in an audible voice. Just a desire and a gentle nudging (and A LOT of motivation, hard work and determination). I started studying for medical entrance exams. Within 2- 3 years I had found a place in a university.

Medical school took ALL my concentration and focus. It took five years. Each year harder than the other. I did not plan beyond that.

It was only two years after graduating from medical school that I started to get more of a blueprint of what I wanted to do as a doctor.

In 2014 I got a very directional prophecy which really resonated with me. Although I didn’t completely change my life, I can see now that the desires on my heart and where God has led me has aligned me with that prophetic word. I have written out that word and read it out over myself and come back to it frequently to realign myself.

Every year Mark and I make a yearly plan and make a plan for five years. We set goals for the year and where we would like to be in five years within our business, brand and career.

However, we hold the plans loosely knowing that God can and has completely surprised us and delighted us along the way.

Now I feel like I have a blueprint of what I am dreaming for the future and where I want to be in the next decade with Marky, however it took years and years to get there. I know it will most likely adapt to those times. However, we also have goals, in alignment with the desires on our hearts, where we feel God is opening doors, and in line with our prophetic words which we have felt resonate with us.

And most of all, we enjoy ourselves along the way. On purpose!

So that is my story….

If you don’t know your assignment I exhort you to pray for clarity.

Start somewhere. Make a plan for the year and a loose plan for three years. God will direct you on the way. But don’t wait and do nothing, while waiting for an angel from heaven to tell you what to do. Start with the opportunities in front of you, the desires on your heart, and where you feel he is leading you. Start somewhere. Just start.

And finally, remember it’s who you do life with that really counts. You become the people you hang around. You become like the leaders and the covering of which you are under.

Make sure you pick the finest people to be your friends and people of the utmost integrity to lead you.

Hope this helps!

How about you? Are you trying to find your assignment or have you found yours?

I would love to hear!

Greenie is sitting beside me and breathing REALLY loud. Should that be irritating me? What am I going to do when I have children? Clearly I need more patience. Or some earmuffs… or a place that is bigger than one bedroom… OR no more coronavirus restrictions… Lord help me.

P.S. Speaking of marriage: Have you read 3 ways to have an incredible marriage? Oh dear, Perhaps I should reread my own articles.
